February 6, 2004--Emerald Abstracts ‘Computing Coolsites’ has given a 4-star award to software inventor Eric Wilson, for his explanation of patents-pending for Microsoft Office users - in their 'best of the Web' indexed reviews. Emerald has been evaluating and publishing academic works since 1967, and today produces 130 journals, mainly for library, research and management professionals.

“Every day there seems to be more big news about patents-pending in the software industry,” Mr. Wilson says. “But I found very little information on the Web about what it all actually means. That’s why invention.docblaster.com is pitched not only at my peculiar situation, but the whole topic in general.”

The honour is considered by Mr. Wilson a triumph of substance over form, as the review itself notes no eye candy, but very important issues concerning Microsoft Office and software users generally:

“The view provided is clear and well balanced, even if only putting one side of the picture,” Emerald's specialist reviewer says. “The site is about as simple as it could be, with no fancy design features, so on the basis of our usual criteria it should be marked low. However, it points up an important issue and therefore we will mark it quite high. If you are interested in what Microsoft is doing, whatever your viewpoint, then this site is worth visiting.”

In addition to the award, invention.docblaster.com will be featured this month on Emerald's site at http://www.emeraldinsight.com/abstracts/computing/trends/coolsites.htm. Additional resources about software patents, including an essay addressing their critics, will be added to the site shortly.

About the inventor and the invention
Eric Wilson is a software inventor and newspaper columnist. In 1999, he started research on ‘Document Display System and Method’. A provisional patent for this and an associated software invention, was obtained with the assistance of an Australian government grant. Document Display System and Method automatically reformats content to fit the end user’s screen and viewing distance, no matter how large or small these may be. The system not only allows for easier reading within a word processor, but is especially useful when securely accessing document images remotely via the Internet.
