Barcelona Marina receives Wireless Internet technology
July, 2003 -- Yachts in Barcelona Marina can now enjoy all the benefits of fast Internet access, via laptop or desktop computers, - thanks to new wireless "Hotspot" facilities that have been introduced by Network Utilities (Systems) Ltd. Previously it was not possible for the hundreds of yachts and superyachts to access the internet at high speed.
"The service is about providing the level of high-speed internet access needed by users to surf the web efficiently, enjoy interactive services such as music, live radio and access corporate email and data networks." said Michele Lewington, Managing Director of Network Utilities.
As well as introducing both short and long term, unlimited broadband access to the Internet on a subscription basis, the company is also offering boat owners and visitors the latest WLAN/802.11b interface cards for rental or purchase. On site support is available to help with installation if needed. Already, more than 50 subscribers are taking advantage of the service and this is expected to increase dramatically after the summer, when many boat owners settle down for the winter months.
Some of the most common everyday services taken for granted by regular Internet users at the marina include:- Weather forecasting -'World wide', marine, air and land Travel - Airline, train, ferry, hotels etc Entertainment - Local cinema, theatres, clubs, restaurants etc Shopping Information - Historical, medical, educational, marine, etc... E-mail from existing or new accounts
To make this possible for laptop users, Network Utilities has created a WiFi "Hotspot" at the Marina, which can deliver very fast Internet transmission (11,000,000 bits per second). It uses a radio technology that has now gained government acceptance by countries such as the USA, UK and Spain. The 'Hotspots' concept was initially intended to be used within hotels, airports, railway stations, and any small area where possible Internet users may be forced to be wait for some time and where Internet access would allow them to use their time productively - reading/writing e-mails and perusing
web sites. The Barcelona wireless network simply expands the concept and physical area without compromising any transmission or bandwidth regulations. Network Utilities is currently piloting additional installations in other marinas and similar locations along the Spanish coastline.
The service is operated via the company's web site at www.boatypeople.com where users can register and sign up for extra time and make payment automatically.
About Network Utilities
Network Utilities is a privately owned company, which was formed in 1989 as a Software House to primarily focus on the development of network communications tools. This subsequently provided a sound basis for strategic alliances with developers of similar products requiring a UK presence and resulted in Network Utilities forging partnership arrangements with several international software manufacturers.
Since 1992 Network Utilities has been committed to providing and supporting a 'best of breed' range of products for the management and security of the enterprise network.
Its extended portfolio now also addresses Internet and wireless LAN security.
