Advanced Version of Word Frequency Counter Software Released

Hermetic Systems' Hermetic Word Frequency Counter software (for PCs running Windows) has proven to be popular with people who need to count the number of times words appear in text documents, since (a) it can be customized by specifying which characters are permitted in words (e.g., hyphens and apostrophes) and which words (such as common words like 'if') should not be counted, and (b) the words counted can be listed either alphabetically or by frequency.

This software has been used by scholars for various purposes, including the analysis of biblical texts in Latin and usage of slang words in modern Swedish (since it will handle non-English text as well as English).

Hermetic Systems has now released an Advanced Version of this software.

The features of the Advanced Version which are additional to the standard version are: (a) The ability to scan not just one file but all files in a folder, and optionally in all subfolders, and to return a single report on the frequencies of words in all files scanned, (b) the ability to specify not only a list of words to be ignored (such as common words in a natural language) but also the ability to specify a list of words which are only to be counted (all words not in this list being ignored), (c) in the latter case to show, for each word found, the files in which it occurs and (d) the extension of 'word' to include names of chemical compounds.

The ability to scan multiple files in multiple folders, and to scan any kind of text file, including HTML and PHP files (the program automatically ignores words within HTML tags), makes this a useful tool for analysing word usage in the files making up a website.

A single-user license for the Advanced Version costs US$49. Purchasers of the standard version (US$35) can upgrade to the Advanced Version by paying US$18. Trial versions of both can be downloaded from the Hermetic Systems website.
