BackTrack ist eine kostenlose Linux-Distribution in Form einer Live-CD, die sich durch zahlreiche Hack- und Knack-Tools von vergleichbaren Linux-Live-CDs unterscheidet. Einerseits eignet sich BackTrack damit hervorragend für Administratoren zum Aufspüren von Sicherheitslücken, andererseits erhalten Hacker mit der Distribution ein optimales Angriffswerkzeug. Hinweis: ISO-Datei zum Brennen auf CD.

BackTrack ist eine von Live-CD, USB oder Netzwerk bootende Linux-Distribution zur Überprüfung der Sicherheit einzelner Rechner in Netzwerken sowie der Gesamtsicherheit des Netzes. BackTrack entstand durch Zusammenlegung von Auditor Security Linux und WHAX am 5. Februar 2006, wobei die gesamte Slackware Linux-Basis auf die Durchführbarkeit von Penetrationstests ausgerichtet wurde.

BackTrack ist ein Projekt von Max Moser, Mati Aharoni und Martin J. Muench. ?BackTrack? heißt soviel wie Rückverfolgung (eines Angriffs).

Geschichte

Zu Beginn der Entwicklung existierten die beiden Distributionen Auditor Security Collection und Whoppix/Whax. Nach einer kurzen Diskussion beschlossen die Entwickler, die Entwicklungsenergien zusammenzulegen und aus Fairnessgründen wurde eine neue Distribution geboren: BackTrack. BackTrack basiert auf der Linux Distribution Slackware mit den SLAX scripts. Dies hauptsächlich aufgrund der Modularität von SLAX, die es ermöglicht, Anpassungen durch den Austausch von Modulen leichter vorzunehmen
