"Open source Wifi Hotspot"

Overview

Virtual Router Manager is a program to create its own Wi-Fi hotspot using Windows technologies included in Windows 7 and upwards. Consequently the software will work with Windows 7, Windows 8.x and Windows Server 2008 R2 only.

The package can take any existing internet connection and then create a new virtual router that other users can access. Therefore, a single computer can receive a LAN wired connection or even a cellular connection, but be able to share it with other Wi-Fi only devices like a Kindle, a non-4G iPad, etc. This will also be useful in a hotel room that only has wired access and usually charges per device but cannot usually detect virtual router sharing in this manner. Using Virtual Router Manager could also be cheaper than being forced to use a more expensive cellular connection on devices that cannot access a wired connection.

The new virtual wireless connection is protected using WPA2 which is presently the most secure, commonly use encryption standard for Wi-Fi. The software doesn't actually let the user pick a different method which perhaps is wise.

The software can be used anywhere there is an existing internet connection that a PC or Windows tablet can access.

Installation

The installation of Virtual Router went as planned.

There was no adware, spyware, malware or other unwanted extra included with the setup package.

Virtual Router Manager requires Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.

Interface

The interface is pretty simple. It has a Settings section which has a border around it. Here the user can alter the suggested SSID for the virtual Wireless network, the password for other users to access the virtual network, and what shared connection is being selected. The list of shared connections includes local area network and wireless networks.

A “Start Virtual Router” / “Stop Virtual Router” button is shown below which needs to be clicked to begin the virtual network.

Any peers who enter the correct login credentials are shown in the Peers Connected area below the button mentioned above.

Pros

  • Convert a wired connection into a share-able, virtual wireless one
  • Avoid paying per device internet access charges in hotels and motels
  • WPA2 encryption as standard
  • Enter three items and click the “Start Virtual Router“ button to get started; no instructions needed

Cons

  • Most likely will not run on older Windows versions.

Alternatives

WiFi Hotspot Creator offers similar functionality with an almost identical interface as well.

Conclusion

Virtual Router Manager is a good way to provide a virtual wireless network for times when there is no other way for other devices to connect to the available internet.
