"Powerful USB Data Monitor for Windows."

Overview

USB Analyzer is a piece of software used to analyze what USB devices are connected to the PC. The software can help the user determine what data that is traveling across and between devices. This data flow can be intercepted, displayed, recorded and analyzed.

One use of the package is to help developers of products that access USB devices and will find it useful to test how their application works with different USB products. For instance, a file manager that retrieves data from a USB flash drive can use this software to test USB protocols and verify the data passing across.

The USB device stack is intercepted with specific interception of IRPs, IOCTLs and URBs. Raw hex dump information can be viewed which is most useful for programmers, plus decoded readable data can be reviewed as well.

Data can be collected and saved in HTML, plain text, XML or CSV files.

The software includes support for both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices. Multiple USB devices can be monitored simultaneously. There is also a useful search function to go through the data to find specific items.

Installation

The software required 7.0 MB of available space to complete the setup. USB 2.0 devices can be monitored once the installed is complete whereas USB 3.0 devices requires a Windows re-boot to begin being able to monitor them.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or toolbars included with the setup package.

USB Analyzer requires Windows XP, Vista, 7, Windows 2003 and Windows Server 2012.

Interface

The interface is pretty simple and modern. It includes a toolbar (but no menu system) with options for New, Open, Save, Start, Stop, AutoScroll, Export, Clear, Pair, Filter, Find, Settings, and Help.

The main viewer is the first large application-wide readout. There is also a Command View in the bottom left pane and a Data View in the right pane.

Pros

  • Intercept, view, record, search and save USB data across USB device stack, IRPs, IOCTLs, or URBs
  • View raw hex dump information
  • Data can be collected and saved in HTML, plain text, XML or CSV files.
  • Software includes support for both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices
  • Multiple USB devices can be monitored simultaneously
  • Search function to go through the data to find specific items
  • 14 day trial period

Cons

  • USB 3.0 device monitoring requires a system restart post-installation

Alternatives

The USB Monitor Protocol Analyzer software can also analyze USB communications and has a strong interface that is easy to understand.

Conclusion
