"View and change drive letter assignments"

Overview

DriveLetterView is a system utility that provides direct access to all the local hard drives, remote network drives, USB drives and connected CD, DVD or Blu-ray optical drives through a single application. The software displays all the drives and lets the user decide whether they wish to reassign any of the drive drive letters to a different one without the need to delve into the internal workings of the Windows operating system to make such a change.

The advantage of the software is that rather than trying to remember the drive letter that the user wishes to alter and also the alternative drive letter that is available to change it to, this software displays all connected and internal storage and optical devices in single viewer.

This approach makes it much easier to view the system as a whole, decide what drive letters need to be changed and also what they should be changed to based on what drive letters have already been assigned. This is especially true when drives letters are being swapped or moved around to ones already taken which can make the logistics a little bit tricky when trying to make such a change via Windows directly.

Installation

The software is a portable app and so it did not need to be installed.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included with the setup package.

DriveLetterView requires Windows 8, 7, 2008, Vista, XP or 2000.

Interface

The interface is plain but is perfectly usable.

There is a menu system with options for File, Edit, View, Options, and Help. Below the menu is a small toolbar with minimal toolbar buttons which provides faster access to key commands that are most used with the DriveLetterView app.

The main display includes a column-based view with columns for Drive letter, Drive type, Drive name, Drive description, Connect, Instance ID, and other categories.

The interface is responsive and easy to use.

Pros

  • Re-assign drive letters for storage drives and optical drives
  • See all local and network drives, USB drives and any optical drives
  • Save the list of devices as a plain text, HTML, CSV or XML file

Cons

  • None

Alternatives

The drive letter can also be changed inside Windows. Microsoft provide their own instructions on how to accomplish this without needing custom software to do so.

Conclusion

DriveLetterView is an excellent option for re-assigning drive letters for local & network hard drives, USB drives, and optical drives.
