"Creates log of Bluetooth activity around you"

Overview

BluetoothLogView is a Bluetooth logging tool that can monitor when a new device comes into range. The tool logs a Bluetooth device coming into scanning range and when it leaves the scanning range as well. Devices can be identified via their MAC address and given their own unique name.

The log of this activity for various Bluetooth-enabled devices can be exported to a file or copied to the Windows clipboard.

Installation

This application does not require to be installed because it is portable. It can be placed on a Windows PC or used via a USB flash drive.

There was no adware, toolbars, spyware or malware included in the file archive.

BluetoothLogView requires Windows XP/SP2, Vista, 7, or 8.

Interface

The interface is a basic one just intended to show what Bluetooth devices (with Bluetooth enabled) are showing in the local vicinity.

The software has a menu system with top-level menu options for File, Edit, View, Options, and Help. There is also a small collection of little toolbar buttons below the menu system which saves time hunting through the menu for the right command.

The main pane shows what Bluetooth devices have been located presently and in the past. There are a few columns providing information about each Bluetooth-enabled device (with Bluetooth currently turned on). The columns include Device Name, Description, Address, Event, Event Time, and a few other criteria gleaned from each device..

When a device appears it is shown in the log and when Bluetooth is turned off or the device goes out of range, then another event is logged to indicate this. Therefore, it is possible to see when devices (and their owners) were available locally and when they left from their Bluetooth activity.

Pros

  • View all the desktop, laptop, and mobile devices with Bluetooth turned on
  • See the Device Name, Description, Address, Event, Event Time, and other criteria across a series of columns
  • The log can show Bluetooth devices entering and exiting range
  • GUI and command line access
  • Save records to a plain text, XML, CSV or HTML file or Export to the clipboard
  • Portable app

Cons

  • Not all Bluetooth stacks are supported with some from BlueSoleil and Broadcom not being supported at all

Alternatives

The Bluetooth Network Scanner can scan for Bluetooth devices in an older Windows computer running XP, while BluetoothView and BluetoothCL can detect Bluetooth devices around you and display info about them.

Conclusion

BluetoothLogView is a useful Bluetooth logging tool that can monitor and log when Bluetooth devices came into range and then moved out of range again.
