The pulmonary artery hypertension evaluation MedicalTemplate is suitable for any health care provider that manages patients with known or suspected pulmonary artery hypertension in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Between 2000-2002, over 807,000 Americans were hospitalized with pulmonary hypertension. Of those admitted to the hospital, 61% were female and 34% were younger than 65. Pulmonary hypertension, elevated pulmonary artery pressure, is due to many causes including certain weight loss drugs (fenfluramine and phentermine), reduced blood oxygen levels, advanced COPD, obstructive sleep apnea, valvular heart disease, scleroderma, and many other diseases.
The symptoms of early pulmonary hypertension are subtle, often only shortness of breath and reduced exercise tolerance. However, people with untreated pulmonary hypertension have a life expectancy of 2.8 years from the onset of symptoms. The availability of newer drugs for pulmonary hypertension such as endothelin receptor blockers, prostacyclins, and phosphodiesterase inhibitors that have been shown to improve quality of life, and in some cases reduce mortality makes the identification of early pulmonary hypertension imperative.
