Symptoms:

After installing ATI Catalyst driver release 8.12 for two or more ATI Radeon HD ™ 4850 graphics cards in a system with ATI CrossFireX™ technology, the system restarts and halts on a black screen. The black screen occurs prior to the loading of the desktop for the Windows Vista 64-bit or Windows Vista 32-bit operating systems.

This issue ONLY occurs when two or more ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphic cards are installed in the system with ATI CrossFireX technology. One single ATI Radeon HD 4850 card will not encounter this issue.

Recommendation:

The following hotfix may help resolve the issue:

Catalyst 8.12 Hotfix for Windows Vista 32-bit Edition

Note: The hotfix driver is only necessary if two or more ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphic cards are installed in the system with ATI CrossFireX technology

Applicable Products:

The issue applies to the following products:

Drivers:

* ATI Catalyst release 8.12

Graphics Cards:

* 2 or more installed ATI Radeon™ HD 4850 series graphic cards in a system with ATI CrossFireX technology

Operating systems:

* Windows Vista 32-Bit Edition

Before installing version 8.12 of ATI Catalyst Display Driver HOTFIX for Windows make sure this is the latest version available and that it works with your current operating system and device model. If the driver contains release notes ("readme" files) proceed with reading them first. Second recommended step is creating a restore point to help you later on in case you install the wrong device driver. Note that some drivers will work instantly after installing them, but others will require a system restart in order to function properly.

As an alternative, you can simplify the process of installing the latest versions for your drivers by using a program to scan all your drivers and compare them with the latest available versions from the manufacturers. We recommend Driver Scanner from Uniblue for such a task. Download it and run a free driver scan here.
