"State of The Art User Experience"

Overview

If you’re into software and more particularly media players, you have probably heard of well-known programs such as VLC and Media Player Classic. But let’s take a look at a less popular media player called BAMP (short for BritGriff Advanced Media Player). Unlike other software of this kind, BAMP doesn’t need external codecs for (better) playback of video/audio files; it already has its own codecs implemented to save you time and effort. In addition it supports a wide variety of file formats.

Installation

Installation is pretty much simple and straightforward. The only configurations you have to make are in the beginning of the procedure, where you are asked whether you want to install Delta toolbar along with BAMP, as well as make Delta the default search engine, homepage and new tab page. The actual media player will be installed a couple of steps afterwards.

Supported operating systems are Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8.

Interface

The program’s interface is very dull, and has only the absolutely necessary functions (Media Library, Settings and About). Developer's note: t's intended for end users (not technical specialists), and has no unneeded functions. I will never add any button, that can confuse users or force them to understand some tech details.

Clicking on the Media Library button will take you to a screen where you can add (or remove) media files. A list with all added media files is displayed in the box located at the bottom of the window. The video screen is located on the upper half of the window, and hovering your mouse over it will show the playback controls. Technical information regarding the video is displayed next to the video screen.

The Settings window has nothing more than a list of formats you want to associate BAMP with.

Pros

Although BAMP doesn’t nail it in regards to visual appearance, it makes up for it in the performance area. It is unbelievably lightweight, something that’s appealing to a lot of users who can’t use heavy programs. In contrast to most media players, this one has no need for codec packs. It includes its own codecs, claiming to have more than 330 codecs included.

Regarding file formats, BAMP supports 160.

The media library holds all video files you added in it, and you can then find them easier by using the integrated search box.

Cons

It has very few features, but that’s the exact point of this program: to be small and lightweight.

Alternatives

As stated in the beginning of this review, VLC (free) is a great media player that can handle all sorts of video files. It shares common ground with BAMP because it doesn't require external codecs since it uses its own. Furthermore, it has a lot of settings that can satisfy even the most advanced users. Media Player Classic (free) is another media player which is chosen by a big percentage of users due to its simple interface and smooth playback.

Conclusion

Nice software, but unfortunately it’s not for everyone due to its restricted functionality and an essentially empty interface.
