"Counts occurrences of words within text."
A word counter utility for Windows, Hermetic Word Frequency Counter, or WFC for short, comes in two editions: standard and advanced. We reviewed the advanced edition earlier this year. Nevertheless, the latest version of the standard edition has just been released, and it deserves your attention. The main difference between the two editions is that WFC standard counts words in a single document or Clipboard, whereas WFC advanced can process files in batches, in a single operation.
WFC analyzes and creates a concise report on words instances in a document, seeking out patterns where a human eye may fail, such as filler words abuse, or wordiness. The program is simple and user-friendly and runs smoothly. It did not crash, nor freeze, or display any annoying ads or pop-ups during our test. It is a non-intrusive application which does not require Internet connection to run. If you need a simple tool for analyzing, counting and ranking words in your text files, Hermetic Word Frequency Counter is for you.
Hermetic Word Frequency Counter installs politely – no adware, or bundled toolbars. There is a nag screen on startup, suggesting you buy the full version. It is compatible with 32- or 64-bit Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 OS.
It runs initially as a 30-day trial version in which all words found are shown (although some of them just partially), with some word counts not being displayed. This limitations vanish after registering the product.
The program sports a simplistic interface which turned out to be user-friendly and easy to grasp. It consists of a main window with more than self-descriptive buttons, and a Parameters window where you can set the words to ignore, or include in the count. The results display words ranked by frequency, but you can sort them in alphabetical order. The report also displays the total number of words in the list, the number of excluded words, and the total number of words in the file.
The program works with English, Danish, Swedish, German, French, Swedish, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Norwegian languages, as well as Hungarian and Dutch.
Who can benefit from it? Anyone whose concern is with text quality and word occurrences: seo people, content writers and writers in general, coders and programmers.
By default, WFC counts unique words in a selected file, and their frequency by scanning a plain text file (ANSI text file, HTML and XML) or text in the Clipboard, and counting word instances ignoring common words like articles and prepositions (optional).
Users can sort the results in alphabetical order or by frequency. Reverse alphabetical order is also available in the Advanced Edition.
The report displays rank and frequency for each word. The report then can be saved to be further processed in Excel. In addition, its ability to process languages other than English make it a great deal for writers and seo specialists from different countries.
Hermetic Word Frequency Counter does not support MS Word and Acrobat Reader files, but since users can simply copy the text to Clipboard and launch the analyzer, it is not a Con, but rather an additional couple of clicks you need to make. In practice, it does not create significant discomfort when working with the app. If you wish to process files in batches, you should consider trying Hermetic Word Frequency Counter Advanced.
AlternativesHere is when you can properly appreciate the Hermetic Word Frequency Counter Standard – in the alternatives section, most of all because its alternatives are found mainly online, and with much more simplistic approach. They focus on seo guys’ needs in counting relevant words in their seo focused texts. These services can be easily found online.
Since we mention the benefits of Hermetic WFC for writers, there is one more service that deserves to be mentioned here - Grammarly. It is also an online service and even though it does not count words, but it certainly is a powerful Grammar and Style checker for professional writers. You can eliminate redundant words and phrases, squinting modifiers or wordiness with its help, not to mention Grammar, Spelling and Syntax.
Hermetic Word Frequency Counter Standard is a highly specialized niche product for a specific stratum of users: writers, journalists, students and teachers pursuing degrees, as well as coders and programmers. If text quality, or certain word instances is of high interest to you, and you run manual searches frequently, by all means consider this straightforward dedicated app. It will take seconds to analyze your data and create a comprehensive report on your writing habits, or more complicated data, like process occurrences in coding. Even though this purchase may not be on your Christmas shopping wish list, you should give it a try and evaluate the program’s potential for yourself.
